Biography

Jack believes libraries play critical roles in open societies and higher education, including as a fundamental piece in larger socio-technical infrastructures supporting learning and research. He has published and presented widely on information literacy and ethics, open access, user expectations and behaviors, collections as data, and libraries as physical spaces. He currently sits on the Publications Coordination Committee for the American Library Association’s Core Division and the National Information Standards Organization’s Information Policy & Analysis Committee, and he frequently reviews for several journals, including College & Research Libraries. He has won awards from the Johns Hopkins University Press, the International Earth Data Alliance, the American Library Association, and the Colorado Endowment for the Humanities.

Prior to joining Mines he served as Associate Dean for Scholarly Communication & Collections Services at the University of Denver Libraries (2017-2024), where he was promoted to Professor and also taught in the Morgridge College of Education, and he held several positions at the University of Colorado Boulder (2005-2017), where he was awarded tenure in 2014. He proudly began his career at a shelver at the Denver Public Library.
