The Data Science – Foundations post-baccalaureate certificate offers a curriculum centered on the core building blocks of data science. You study topics such as data handling, basic statistical reasoning, introductory modeling and data-driven problem-solving. Coursework emphasizes understanding concepts, interpreting results and communicating insights clearly. 

This is a hybrid program that combines online coursework with on-campus learning opportunities. The format supports working professionals while still providing opportunities for in-person interaction and applied learning. Research is not required for this certificate, though courses often include hands-on assignments and applied exercises using realistic datasets. 

The program is geared toward individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree and want an entry point into data science. It is especially well suited if your undergraduate background is outside data science or computing and you want to build foundational skills before pursuing more advanced certificates or a master’s degree. Certificate degree requirements include completion of a defined set of courses. 

Prerequisite Courses:

Probability and mathematical foundations are required to succeed in the program:

  • Programming and Data Structures (CSCI 261-262)
  • Linear Algebra (MATH 332)
  • Probability (MATH 334)

Or equivalent courses at another institution and earning a B grade or higher.
