Program Overview
The Data Science – Foundations post-baccalaureate certificate at Colorado School of Mines is designed for you if you want a structured, practical introduction to data science. Offered through the Data Science Department, this hybrid post-baccalaureate certificate builds on your bachelor’s degree and provides a clear pathway into data-driven work.
Data science has become essential across technical, business and operational roles. Employers are looking for professionals who understand how data is collected, analyzed and interpreted and who can apply that understanding with confidence. This certificate helps you build that foundation. You gain exposure to the core concepts, tools and ways of thinking that define modern data science.
Mines approaches data science with an applied, engineering-informed mindset. Coursework emphasizes clarity, correctness and practical use rather than surface-level familiarity. You learn from faculty who connect foundational concepts to real problems and real decisions, helping you build skills that hold up in professional settings.
Whether you are transitioning into data-focused roles, preparing for more advanced data science study or strengthening your analytical toolkit, this certificate offers a focused and accessible starting point.
Program Detail
The Data Science – Foundations post-baccalaureate certificate offers a curriculum centered on the core building blocks of data science. You study topics such as data handling, basic statistical reasoning, introductory modeling and data-driven problem-solving. Coursework emphasizes understanding concepts, interpreting results and communicating insights clearly.
This is a hybrid program that combines online coursework with on-campus learning opportunities. The format supports working professionals while still providing opportunities for in-person interaction and applied learning. Research is not required for this certificate, though courses often include hands-on assignments and applied exercises using realistic datasets.
The program is geared toward individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree and want an entry point into data science. It is especially well suited if your undergraduate background is outside data science or computing and you want to build foundational skills before pursuing more advanced certificates or a master’s degree. Certificate degree requirements include completion of a defined set of courses.
Prerequisite Courses:
