Program Overview
The Geology PhD program is designed to help you pursue original research that advances geological science while remaining connected to applied questions.
This program builds on your bachelor’s degree or master’s degree by shifting your focus from learning existing interpretations to creating new ones. You will develop advanced expertise in geological theory, methods and analysis while tailoring coursework to support your dissertation research.
What you’ll study and do
Your coursework includes advanced geology classes and electives aligned with your research interests. Depending on your focus, this may include structural geology, sedimentology, petrology, geomorphology, stratigraphy or geophysics-related topics. Coursework is intended to strengthen your research foundation rather than compete with it.
The center of the degree is independent research. You’ll identify a research problem, design a rigorous approach to investigate it and produce results that make an original contribution to geology. Research methods may include field mapping, sampling, laboratory analysis, analytical instrumentation and computational modeling. You'll work closely with a faculty advisor and committee and complete standard doctoral milestones including proposal, candidacy and dissertation defense.

Economic geology
Rising global population and living standards are increasing demand for mineral products of all types, even as easily accessible deposits decline and new resources must be found in deeper or more remote environments. At Mines, economic geology focuses on understanding how mineral deposits form and applying that knowledge to discover, characterize and responsibly develop the materials essential to modern society.
Engineering geology and geotechnics
Engineering geology and geotechnics apply geological principles to solve engineering problems, from landslide analysis and foundation design to resource evaluation and hazard assessment, often serving as the critical link between design, construction and the ground itself. At Mines, this globally recognized program provides training across geology, hazards, site investigation and engineering analysis, preparing graduates for careers in consulting, government, industry and academia with strong placement outcomes.
Petroleum geoscience
Petroleum geoscience has long been a strength at Mines, with a program that has evolved alongside industry needs to prepare graduates with integrated training in geology, geophysics, petrophysics, geochemistry and engineering, supported by strong foundations in science, computing and quantitative analysis. Underground construction and tunneling
The underground community at Mines is comprised of a collaborative, interdisciplinary group of faculty and students from civil engineering, geology and geological engineering, mining engineering and mechanical engineering, as well as geophysics and computer science, with a collective interest in education and research in underground engineering.

World-Class Labs, Centers and Facilities
The Center to Advance the Science of Exploration to Reclamation in Mining (CASERM) is a collaborative venture between Colorado School of Mines and Virginia Tech aimed at transforming the way that geoscience data is used in the mineral resource industry. Research focuses on the integration of diverse geoscience data to improve decision making across the mine life cycle, beginning with the exploration for subsurface earth resources continuing through mine operation as well as closure and environmental remediation.
The Rates and Dates Laboratory brings together paleoglaciologists and isotope geochemists to decipher what glaciers and ice sheets were doing in the thousands of years before we started watching. Led by Assistant Professor Ryan Venturelli, the lab maintains an active field-based research program.
The Marshall Lab is united by a desire to understand how climate change is altering water in the western U.S. and beyond. Led by Assistant Professor Adrienne Marshall, the lab utilizes primarily computational methods, using physically based modeling and data science approaches to advance knowledge of the role water plays in climate change adaptation and mitigation.
