Program Overview
Operations research focuses on designing, analyzing and improving complex systems using mathematical modeling. As organizations rely more heavily on data, models and optimization to guide decisions, they need experts who can move beyond off-the-shelf tools and develop new methods that stand up to scrutiny.
A PhD in Operations Research with Engineering from Colorado School of Mines prepares you to do exactly that. This degree is built for you if you want to influence how high-impact engineering and operational decisions are made. Your research will emphasize clarity, rigor and relevance, connecting mathematical insight directly to engineering systems. You will develop the depth needed to create new optimization and decision frameworks and the judgment required to apply them responsibly in practice.
Program Overview
The Operations Research with Engineering PhD is an on-campus, interdisciplinary program. Students conduct original research that advances optimization, decision analysis and systems engineering.
This program builds on your bachelors degree or masters degree by shifting your role from using existing models to developing new theory, algorithms and applications. You will deepen your foundation in mathematics, probability and computation while anchoring your work in engineering contexts.
What you'll study and do
Your coursework is tailored to your research focus and may span operations research, applied mathematics, engineering systems and data analysis. Topics may include optimization, stochastic models, simulation, decision analysis, systems modeling and algorithm design. Coursework is selected to directly support your dissertation rather than compete with it.
The center of the program is independent research. You will identify a complex engineering or operational problem, develop new models or methods and demonstrate value through rigorous analysis or computation. Research methods may include mathematical proof, algorithm development, simulation and applied modeling. You will work closely with a faculty advisor and interdisciplinary committee and complete proposal, candidacy and dissertation defense milestones.
What it takes to complete the PhD at Mines
Completion of the PhD requires advanced coursework, successful completion of qualifying and candidacy requirements and a defended dissertation that makes an original contribution to operations research with engineering relevance. As an on-campus program, the experience emphasizes immersion in research groups, collaboration across disciplines and active engagement in seminars. Your work will stay grounded in real systems and decision contexts.

Meet Jamie Grymes '23
Completing my PhD in Operations Research with Engineering at Colorado School of Mines was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my career. My military background gave me the grit and resilience to push through when things got tough. I learned early on that I always had another gear, whether mentally or physically, and that mindset helped me publish five academic articles in three years and now serve as chair for the Military and National Defense track at the Winter Simulation Conference. The mentorship I received from Dr. Alexandra Newman, who exemplifies tenacity and compassion, was instrumental in my success. Beyond academics, living in Colorado and connecting with an incredible network of peers and professionals enriched both my personal and professional life. A Mines degree did not just advance my technical expertise; it opened doors to leadership opportunities and a lifelong community.
