Program Detail
This on-campus master’s thesis program combines advanced coursework with independent research. You will take graduate-level courses in areas such as tunnel engineering, rock mechanics, ground support systems, excavation and construction methods, numerical modeling and risk assessment. Coursework can be tailored to your technical interests while maintaining a strong core in underground engineering fundamentals.
A central element of the degree is the thesis. You will work closely with a faculty advisor to define a research problem related to underground construction and tunneling. Research may involve analytical modeling, laboratory testing, numerical simulation or case-based investigation of real projects. You will complete a written thesis and oral defense that demonstrate technical depth and applied understanding.

The Center for Underground Construction and Tunneling (UC&T) advances knowledge and state-of-the-art practice in underground construction and tunneling. Led by Professor Mike Mooney, the center’s research includes soil conditioning, tunnel boring machine techniques and cross passage design and construction.
The Earth Mechanics Institute is one of the premier rock mechanics laboratories in North America. Led by Professor Jamal Rostami and founded to advance the science of mining and tunnelling, EMI has since broadened its scope to support civil, energy and underground construction projects worldwide.
Associate Professor Reza Hedayat addresses the fundamental challenges in understanding the behavior of materials and the structures made of them at different time- and length- scales. His research group focuses on multiscale experimental study of geomaterials, construction materials, mine tailings, rock and fracture mechanics, and applied geophysics and wave propagation.
