Why Chemistry Minor?

From advanced manufacturing and new materials to healthcare and environmental monitoring, chemistry shows up in nearly every technical field that shapes the modern world.

At Colorado School of Mines, the Chemistry minor offered through the Chemistry Department gives you a solid chemical foundation that fits naturally alongside an engineering or applied science bachelor’s degree. You will explore how matter behaves at the molecular level and how those interactions scale up to influence systems you can see and build. Along the way, you will connect core concepts to real outcomes, learning how chemical principles shape design decisions, safety and performance. This minor adds range to your technical skill set and will help you communicate effectively with chemists, engineers and scientists working together to solve complex problems.

Program Overview

The Chemistry minor focuses on core principles such as chemical structure, reactions, thermodynamics and laboratory analysis while emphasizing hands-on learning and analytical thinking. You will develop skills in quantitative reasoning, experimental design and data interpretation that support both engineering and scientific applications. You will explore how atoms and molecules behave, how reactions are controlled and how chemical properties are measured and interpreted.

Coursework includes laboratory experiences that develop careful observation, data analysis and problem-solving skills. You will learn how chemical knowledge supports real systems and technologies, not just equations on a page.

Experiential Opportunities

Chemistry graduate student Darius Hayes works in the glovebox in the McGuirk Lab, which focuses on interdisciplinary research at the interface of synthetic chemistry and materials science — including carbon capture.

Hands-on learning is central to studying chemistry at Mines. Laboratory courses give you experience with instrumentation, experimental design and data interpretation. You practice working carefully and systematically, skills that carry directly into engineering and scientific careers. These labs help you connect theory to observation and data-driven conclusions.

You can also participate in undergraduate research with chemistry faculty. Mines Radiochemistry Laboratory

Mines is home to a fully equipped laboratory dedicated to chemical experiments with radioactive materials from tritium, the lightest radioactive nuclide, to einsteinium, the heaviest element available in weighable quantities. In addition to a full suite of research-grade counting equipment, the facilities include equipment for thermodynamic and kinetic studies of chemical reactions and for characterization of chemical separations or geological transport.

Materials Characterization and Mechanical Testing Centers

Enable microstructure analysis using optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, mechanical testing, fatigue evaluation and fractography for AM part qualification.

Mines Shared Instrumentation Facility

The Mines Shared Instrumentation Facility (SIF) provides centralized access to world-class scientific equipment and engineering instruments on the Mines campus, including electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, materials manufacturing, mechanical testing, nanofabrication, optical and electrical surface characterization, scanning probe and optical microscopy, thin film deposition, water quality analysis, x-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy.
