2023 has been a record-breaking season for Mines Football and quarterback John Matocha. After winning the 2022 Harlon Hill Award and 2022-23 Academic All-America Overall Team Member of the Year for NCAA Division II, Matocha is leading the No. 1 Orediggers into the NCAA DII Football National Championship Game for the second year in a row. Plus, he's graduating this month with a Master of Science in computer science. Before the undefeated Orediggers take the field Dec. 16 against the Harding Bisons, let’s take a look at what it is that makes the team -- and Matocha -- so special.
