At Colorado School of Mines, we’re integrating AI thoughtfully, ethically, and strategically to prepare graduates who are ready to lead in an AI-enabled world. To meet the shifting workforce needs and address the evolving landscape in higher education, Mines is focused on three priorities:
- Clear Guidance: Consistent, transparent expectations for AI use
- AI Literacy: A shared baseline for what every Mines graduate should understand related to AI, tailored by discipline
- Real Support: Faculty development, redesigned coursework and hands-on learning supported by a network of university resources, faculty and student leaders.
Preparing Engineers for an AI-Enabled World
At Mines, AI strengthens human intelligence by enhancing creativity and preparing leaders for industries being transformed in real time. Our AI initiatives are co-created with students and faculty and shaped by ongoing input from industry partners and alumni. We’re focused on building the future workforce with the skills and perspective needed to apply AI effectively across engineering and science.
Scaling AI Across the Curriculum
The first iteration of the AI@Mines Literacy Framework is designed to prepare graduates to be leaders of responsible, ethical innovation in an AI-integrated future. Organized around five key areas, this shared framework equips Mines students with a unique combination of knowledge, skills, and mindsets necessary to critically engage and shape AI across STEM fields as engineers, collaborators, and decision-makers.
Scaling the framework across the curriculum is underway and will continue to be refined in partnership with faculty and industry, building toward cohesive, program-level approaches grounded in academic rigor and evolving workforce needs. This work is being actively supported through course pilots, curricular initiatives, strategic hires, and new faculty fellowships in AI. As implementation progresses, students will engage with AI in increasingly sophisticated ways throughout their academic journey—moving from foundational exposure to discipline-specific applications—to ensure they are prepared to apply AI responsibly and effectively in professional contexts.
Foundational Proficiency
Students build conceptual and technical understanding of how AI systems work, including machine learning, probabilistic reasoning, and model behavior. This foundation enables graduates to select, evaluate, and responsibly apply AI tools across engineering and scientific tasks.
Ethical Stewardship
Mines emphasizes responsible AI development and use. Students examine ethical, legal, environmental, and societal implications of AI—including privacy, bias, labor impacts, and misinformation—ensuring innovation remains human-centered and accountable.
Strategic Communication
Effective AI use requires clear communication between humans and machines. Students develop skills in prompt design, collaborative workflows, and transparent documentation of AI contributions within technical and professional environments.
Applied Innovation
Students integrate AI tools into real engineering workflows—prototyping ideas, analyzing data, automating processes, and developing solutions that generate economic value and positive societal impact.
Critical Agility
Because AI systems evolve rapidly, Mines graduates learn to critically evaluate AI outputs, identify hallucinations or bias, maintain meaningful human oversight and demonstrate adaptability in AI-assisted work.
Research and Expertise
AI research and faculty-led initiatives at Mines span computer science, engineering systems, energy, and beyond, advancing both the practical application of AI and the study of its impact across disciplines.
Together, this work reflects a campus-wide commitment to applied AI, educational innovation, and workforce preparation — reinforced by more than 50 faculty who have completed the Trefny Center’s Teaching and Learning Lab: Human-Centered AI, redesigning assessments to promote critical thinking, set clear expectations, and strengthen student learning in the age of AI.
