International Students

International students apply through the Colorado School of Mines admissions process by submitting academic transcripts, test scores (if required) and proof of English proficiency. Depending on your program, you may also need to submit additional materials such as letters of recommendation or a statement of purpose. 

Once admitted, you will receive the official documents needed to apply for your student visa and begin preparing for your arrival in the United States. Starting early and staying organized helps ensure a smooth application and transition to Mines.

Most international students study at Mines on an F-1 student visa, which is designed for full-time academic programs in the United States. Exchange students and visiting scholars typically use a J-1 visitor visa, which supports short-term study, teaching or research experiences. After you are admitted, ISSS will issue the appropriate immigration document (I-20 for F-1 or DS-2019 for J-1) and guide you through the visa application and interview process. Understanding your visa type and requirements early helps you prepare confidently for arrival.

Yes—international students at Mines can work on campus while enrolled full-time, which provides valuable professional experience and helps you build connections within the university community. In addition, students may qualify for approved off-campus opportunities that align with their academic program. 

These work experiences allow you to apply what you’re learning in the classroom to real-world environments while developing skills that are highly valued by employers. It’s important to follow all employment regulations, and ISSS advisors are available to help you understand your options.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) are employment authorization options that allow international students to gain hands-on experience in their field of study. CPT is typically used during your program for internships or required work experiences, while OPT allows you to work after graduation. 

Students in STEM fields may be eligible for an extended OPT period, enabling additional time to gain professional experience in the United States. These opportunities are a key benefit of studying at Mines, helping you build a strong foundation for your global career.

Maintaining your F-1 visa status or your J-1 visa status requires meeting several important requirements, including enrolling full-time, keeping your immigration documents valid and following U.S. government regulations. You may also need to report updates such as address changes or program adjustments.

Yes. International students and scholars may be eligible to bring dependents, such as a spouse or children, to the United States on F-2 or J-2 visas. These visas allow your family to live with you while you study or conduct research at Mines.  

ISSS provides visitor family resources including guidance on eligibility requirements, documentation and planning for dependents, including considerations such as housing, healthcare and schooling.
