Why Petroleum Data Analytics Minor?

In today’s complex energy landscape, data is central to how decisions are made. From subsurface modeling to production forecasting, the ability to turn complex datasets into actionable insights is a valuable engineering skill.

The Petroleum Data Analytics minor at Colorado School of Mines helps you build that skill set. Sitting at the intersection of engineering and data science, this minor will help you learn how data connects to reservoir behavior, drilling strategies, production performance and more, making petroleum resource acquisition more economical, safe and environmentally sound. You will gain experience and knowledge that is valuable across energy, infrastructure and analytics-driven role, extending your technical foundation with tools that support smarter, data-informed decisions.

Program Overview

The Petroleum Data Analytics minor combines petroleum engineering concepts with statistics, data analysis and computational tools. Working with real petroleum data, you’ll learn how to collect and preprocess that data and rearrange it for use in analysis. You’ll apply standard probability and statistics methodology to various data constructs and analyze data to determine which regression and prediction techniques would apply. You’ll also build system algorithms for data information insight and use various data analytics analysis and visualization software for the petroleum industry.

Coursework emphasizes practical application, from defining problems to communicating results. Rather than focusing on theory alone, this minor centers on how data is used in real operational contexts. By graduation, you’ll be prepared to collaborate with engineers and analysts who rely on data to guide complex technical choices.

Students must complete a minimum of 18 credits related to data analytics.
