Program Overview
The Computer Science Bridge Program at Colorado School of Mines is a graduate pathway designed for you if your bachelor’s degree is not in computer science but you want to earn a computer science master’s degree. This program gives you the technical foundation required to succeed in a rigorous, engineering-focused graduate environment.
Through a rigorous curriculum, you’ll build fluency in core computer science concepts while strengthening your quantitative reasoning and problem-solving skills. The bridge year is structured to align directly with the expectations of Mines’ computer science master’s program so that when you transition into graduate coursework, you are prepared to meaningfully contribute.
Completing this bridge program enhances the value of your undergraduate degree by adding a strong technical skill set that is in demand across nearly every industry. You gain experience translating real-world problems into computational solutions, working with data and algorithms and thinking like a computer scientist.

Program Details
Designed for students coming from any undergraduate discipline and have a basic level of knowledge in algebra and calculus, the Computer Science Bridge Program provides a focused curriculum that mirrors the foundational coursework expected of undergraduate computer science majors. During the bridge year, you’ll complete coursework in programming, data structures, discrete mathematics and computational thinking.
Courses emphasize logical reasoning, mathematical foundations and hands-on problem solving. You learn how systems are designed, analyzed and optimized, with hands-on projects that build confidence through practice. Faculty teaching the bridge curriculum work closely with the computer science graduate program to ensure continuity between the bridge year and the master’s degree.
Formal research is not required during the bridge year, but you are exposed to research-driven thinking and may engage in project-based work that reflects current challenges in computing. This prepares you for research, applied projects or industry-focused work during the master’s degree.
By the end of the program, you’ll be ready to enter the Computer Science master’s program with the technical preparation and academic confidence needed to succeed at Mines.

You will enjoy a wide range of labs and research facilities at Mines that support your pursuit of a computer science degree.
The Mines Interactive Robotics Research Lab (MIRRORLab) develops intelligent agents designed to interact naturally with human teammates. Led by Associate Professor Tom Williams, the lab seeks to combine computational methods and insights from artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and human-robot interaction with robotic and augmented reality technologies.
The Center for Cyber Security and Privacy, led by Professor Chuan Yue, leverages the unique strengths of Mines in engineering and applied science to conduct research in web, mobile, cloud, cyber-physical, IoT and AI systems security, usable security and privacy, computer and network security, secure software development, applied cryptography, memory security and more.
The Pervasive Computing Systems Research Group designs algorithms, develops techniques and builds systems to enable pervasive and mobile computing applications. Led by Professor Qi Han, the group’s focus includes swarm/networked robot systems, mobile sensing, Internet of Things and multi-user augmented reality.

I think the Bridge program was perfect for me. Coming from a mechanical engineering background, the classes that are required really help you set a solid foundation in computer science. The part that I really liked was that after the required courses, you have free range to explore what topics/classes interest you in CS. I currently have a job lined up with a software development company (Tyler Tech) as a full-stack software engineer. For any prospective Bridge student, my advice would be just to do it. If you have discovered a love for computer science or want to change career fields, I highly recommend the Bridge program.
