Why Mining Engineering Minor?

Mining engineering is about much more than extraction. It’s about designing systems that move materials safely, efficiently and responsibly from the earth and into society. Across industries, these systems influence how resources are developed and managed and how projects are able to succeed long-term. Understanding the full mining life cycle means looking at how subsurface conditions, technology and planning come together in complex, real-world environments.

At Colorado School of Mines, the Mining Engineering minor helps build that perspective. You’ll explore how large-scale operations are designed and managed, how engineering choices affect safety, productivity and outcomes over time. The minor adds practical, industry-relevant insight to your degree and prepares you to contribute to multidisciplinary teams working across resource and infrastructure projects.

Program Overview

The Mining Engineering minor introduces you to the fundamentals behind modern mining systems, including mine design, rock mechanics, materials handling and operational planning. You’ll learn how deposits are evaluated and how technical and logistical challenges are addressed in practice.

Your coursework will emphasize applied problem solving, quantitative thinking and systems-level analysis. By connecting engineering fundamentals to real operations, the program helps you understand how large projects are executed, monitored and improved. You will graduate with added technical depth and a clearer view of how complex engineering systems perform in the field.

Geological Engineering:

Adding the Mining Engineering minor builds on subsurface knowledge with operational and design considerations, supporting work in site evaluation and project planning.

Mechanical Engineering:

Environmental Engineering:

Applied learning plays a major role in the Mining Engineering minor. Courses often feature real-world examples, design projects and problem sets based on real mining operations, giving you experience working through scenarios and engineering decisions. These activities help you understand how technical choices are made in practice and how systems perform at scale.

You can also participate in undergraduate research with mining engineering faculty, working on topics across the mining lifecycle. Through this work, you gain experience applying concepts to real mining challenges while strengthening your technical reasoning. Student organizations connected to mining engineering provide additional ways to engage with industry, build connections and apply what you learn in collaborative settings.
