Why Space Mining Engineering Minor?

As we continue to take the next steps in space exploration, the need for engineering systems that can operate in environments far beyond Earth becomes more urgent. Many of those systems will rely on materials sourced beyond our planet where resources are unfamiliar and conditions are extreme. Understanding these systems means rethinking familiar concepts. Gravity, logistics and risk all behave differently, requiring engineers to adapt methods and design with new assumptions in mind. It’s a field that blends creativity with rigorous engineering judgment.

The Space Mining minor at Colorado School of Mines connects terrestrial mining expertise with emerging off-world applications. You’ll examine how materials are identified, accessed and managed in space environments while building the skills to successfully take on unfamiliar challenges. This minor expands your perspective on where engineering can go and how it can be applied at the cutting edge of our next era of space exploration.

Program Overview

The Space Mining minor allows you to explore how core mining and systems design principles translate beyond Earth. You will gain insight into the basic knowledge of planetary geology, exploration methods and resource/reserve estimation and valuation. You'll also gain practical knowledge in applications of various equipment necessary for excavation and the production of basic materials needed to build sustainable habitats and infrastructures.

Drawing on Mines’ strengths in mining engineering and applied science, this program takes an interdisciplinary and hands-on approach. You’ll develop analytical skills and technical range that complement your major while preparing you to think critically about complex, future-focused projects, supporting innovation in both terrestrial and space industries.

Program Options

This minor is offered through the Mining Engineering Department.

A total of 18 credits is required to complete the Space Mining minor.

The minor program will prepare students to further specialize in ISRU engineering.

The first three courses provide students with basic knowledge related to space resources and subsequent courses give students applied knowledge in more focused areas in space mining.

Mining Engineering:

This pairing extends core mining knowledge into new environments and supports system-level thinking and advanced design challenges.

Mechanical Engineering:

Pairing these subjects adds insight into equipment, structures and system performance, and together, these skills support complex system design.

Geological Engineering:

Combining space mining and geological engineering strengthens understanding of materials and formation processes that supports resource evaluation and site assessment concepts applied beyond Earth.

Experiential Opportunities

Hands-on, applied work is an important part of the Space Mining minor. Courses incorporate design projects, real-world case studies and problem-solving exercises that push you to adapt familiar engineering approaches to unfamiliar environments. You’ll build experience navigating uncertainty and defending design decisions in complex scenarios.

Opportunities to participate in undergraduate research allow you to explore space-related engineering challenges alongside faculty and industry partners. These projects help you apply technical knowledge in new contexts while developing confidence in your approach to open-ended problems. Student teams and interdisciplinary collaborations offer additional ways to test ideas, develop concepts and engage with space systems.

Through these experiences, you strengthen teamwork, creativity and your ability to think like an engineering in emerging fields—on Earth and beyond.
